it gets very difficult. it's a very shocking and sad time for the school. >> parents and students arriving at a south bay elementary school could not believe the news they just heard about the principal.

good afternoon. i'mer toly campbell -- i'm tori campbell. in the next half-hour, a principal will face felony drug charges. this is causing real concern with parents. janine de la vega has more with the changes happening at the school. >> reporter: the principal is behind bars at the county jail. here at the school he once led, teachers are trying to treat the day as normal as possible for the children. but they do plan on telling the older children what happened. as school children arrived at montague elementary, many were unaware of the serious drug charges their principal faces. many parents had heard the news. >> it's upsetting and very surprising. >> we were surprised because mr. lewis is respected here. >> reporter: agents arrested lewis last week.

a spokesperson said they received a tip that he was involved in drugs and frequented an online dating site. the two agreed to meet after they set him up. >> there was no incation anything is connected to campus. we didn't know anything about it. >> reporter: district officials say lewis is well liked as a principal here. he's now on paid leave. the district has replaced him with an interim principal with 20 years of experience. some parents say they are sad because lewis was involved in the school's anti-drug program. >> we're all susceptible to making mistakes. he's made his. a pretty egregious one. i hope he learns from it. and i wish him the best. >> reporter: letters will be sent home to parents explaining the situation. lewis faces six criminal charges ranging from possession

of drugs to possession with the intent to sell. back to you. >> thank you. > jury selection started in the trial of a former san francisco police crime lab technician accused of stealing cocaine. 61-year-old deborah madden faces a maximum sentence of four years in prison if convicted. prosecutors say she stole cocaine from the lab's drug analysis unit. that led to the closure of the facility and prosecutor's dismissal of criminal cases. hayward police are investigating a fatal police shooting overnight. it happened on tennyson road near mission boulevard not far from the south hayward b.a.r.t. station. ktvu has been covering the story since 4:0 this morning -- 4:30 this morning. allie? >> reporter: well, part of the intersection is still closed

off to traffic. police officers are still gathering evidence for this officer involved shooting investigation. about an hour ago, the coroner removed the body of the man shot and killed. the shooting happened at 1:00 this morning. hayward police say they received a call about shots fired at the birthdy bird lounge on mission boulevard and hayward. the shots rang out after an altercation happened inside the bar. one person was struck by a bullet taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. police were looking for the gunman. they were told he fled the bar driving a blue buick or cadillac. police saw the vehicle fitting that description at a gas station on tennyson and mission. >> officers saw the vehicle and got behind it and prepared to make contact with the driver. when they did, the driver reversed his vehicle quickly at the officers. the officers feared for their safety and responded in order to stop his actions with that gunfire.

>> i heard a vehicle coming down, it sounded likes he was doing -- like he was doing doughnuts or something. high speed and then there was a crash and then no more than a minute later, i heard no less than 12, 15 rounds fired off. >> reporter: police have not released the identity of the man that was shot. this afternoon a man who described himself as a childhood friend told us the his friend was in his 20s and a father. he said he was watching football with him yesterday and didn't know he was planning to go to a another bar. i asked the police if they recovered a weapon. roger keener told us the car had not been searched yet and then at the tow yard, they will search the vehicle and try to figure out for sure if the guy

from this car is the same guy that fired his shot gun. back to you. >> thank you. a community meeting hat just gotten underway in san francisco. the purpose is to talk to the public concerns about a police shooting last thursday that led to protest and violence outside the mission district police station. ktvu's alex savidge is live to let us know how the meet something going so far. >> reporter: well, good afternoon. police chief greg suhr said his officers did nothing wrong. he and other members of the department are having a town hall meeting inside the cornerstone church in the mission. they are providing more detail. [no audio] >> all right. we just lost os communication there -- our communication with alex savidge. hopefully we'll hear back from him. meanwhile, a report in the "chronicle" is raising new questions about the fatal

shooting of 18-year-old alan blueford. the paper quote as police source saying blueford's fingerprints were found on a gun he allegedly pointed at police before being shot in may. the claim is unsubstantiated, the family says. last week protesters briefly shut down the counsel meeting to -- council meeting to protest the meeting. a deadly accident happened around 3:30 this morning on southbound interstate 680 near stoneridge road in pleasanton. that's just south of the i-5 junction. the highway patrol says it appears an unidentified man walked onto the freeway. he was hit by at least two vehicles. the drivers involved in the accident all stayed at the scene and are cooperating with investigators. >> it was not a hit and run.

the person stayed and we have their statement. >> what did they tell you in general? >> we can't tell you exactly happened. >> the freeway was shut down in the southbound direction for three hours. a detour was set up while investigators were at the scene. it reopened around 6:30. >> as we learn more in the future, more will need to be done. a bay area lawmaker will explain new legislation to try to prevent a repeat of the san bruno pipeline disaster. rosemary says you can expect ups and downs when it comes to temperatures this week. she'll have details in a few minutes. california's former governor opens up about a lot of things about a new book and that includes his affair with a housekeeper. vo: for years, sacramento politicians have chopped away funds for our schools.

a wildfire continues to burn out of control in san diego county. the so-called shockey fire started yesterday afternoon and is raging along the shockey truck trail on highway 94 on the campo indian reservation. according to calfire, so far, it's burned 2,000 acres and is only 10% contained. evacuation orders are in effect. 20 homes have been destroyed. ten others have been damaged. 80 more homes are threatened.

and further north, another fire in riverside county is almost out. as many as 200 homes are still threatened there. that fire has burned more than 150 acres in murietta. the cause of both fires now under investigation. breast cancer researchers say findings from a new study may lead to new treatments and possibly a cure for breast cancer in the future. researchers at washington university have identified four genetically distinct types of breast cancer. they say within those types they found hallmark genetic changes that are driving many other cancers. this discovery is expected to lead to new treatments with drugs already approved for cancers in other parts of the boughtdy -- body. a fatal shooting occurred last night. police rushed to the area after getting reports of a man lying in the street.

they say the man died from a single gunshot wound. police are filing some leads. but there are no suspects. residents say there have been a lot of shootings on their streets. they say gangs and easy access to guns are some of the problems. the latest edition of "people" magazine has an article on the life of scott peterson who is currently on death row. "people" reports that peterson does not appear to be depressed and that he jokes with people enjoys playing basketball. he was convicted of the 2002 killings of pregnant wife laci and their unborn son. he maintains their innocence. new at noon, jerry hill praised governor brown's decision sign three measures that grew out of the 2010 pipeline explosion in san bruno. hill held a news conference in front of the public utilities

office. all three of the laws are aimed at the p.u.c. >> this legislation will give the cpuc the tools to focus from profits to safety. >> last year hill sponsored legislation. there is another community meeting in richmond today about the chevron refinery fire. the august 6th fire sent more than 16,000 people to hospitals for treatments. the meeting will be held at the richmond memorial auditorium at civic center plaza and doors open at 5:15. in a separate case, investigators want to figure out who knew about a bypass

pipe used at chevron's richmond refinery. the "chronicle" reports the environmental protection agency launched a criminal investigation earlier this year. that's after bay area quality district managers say they found a pipe inside the refinery that routes hydrocarbon gases around pollution monitoring equipment. surveillance tapes from the refinery show gases flared from that pipe at least 27 times without monitoring, experts say. >> we're awaiting the results of an e.p.a. investigation that will look at whether this conduct was intentional or negligent. chevron says the pipe was for balancing pressure but the company was fined $170,000 by the regulators. this investigation is not related to last month's refinery fire. as i mentioned earlier, a community meeting hat just gotten underway in san francisco to talk about a

police shooting last thursday. ktvu's alex savidge joins us live with the chief's response. alex? >> reporter: well, good afternoon. police chief greg suhr said today his officer had no choice but to open fire on an armed parolee last week. he and other members of the department, holding that meeting here inside cornerstone church in the mission. they are providing more details about the police shooting of an armed parolee. it was one that sparked angry demonstrations. as the meeting got started, the chief revealed the identity of the man shot. he says the 29-year-old man, a known gang member, was the plan shot by police. police say they were trying to talk with them on a curfew check. he pulled out a tech .9 handgun on a couple of plain clothes officers and one of those officers opened fire, hitting the suspect twice. he's expected to survive. the chief also said this morning the man who was shot was paroled for a double shooting. one of the victims in that

case, a 15-year-old. >> these officers on thursday night were exactly where any were supposed to be doing exactly what they were asked to do, put themselves in harm's way so innocent people could not be harmed in targeting those most likely to. >> make no mistake about it -- that's a murder weapon. that's not a weapon for self- preservation or protection. that weapon was designed to kill more than one person. i've been briefed on this incident. we should be talking about the heroism of the san francisco police who took on the individual with that weapon. [ applause ] >> reporter: that shooting led to a couple of nights of demonstrations in the mission. protesters walked through the nights and spray painted banks. officers in riot gear had to be called in. there were a couple of dozen or so community members on hand. you might have heard some of

them applauded at some of the comments made by the chief and some of the other officers involved. the chief said essentially these officers were protecting themselves and the public when they opened fire. the man who was shot by officers now facing several charges, including assault on a police officer and this shooting will be investigated by san francisco police, homicide investigators and the district attorney's office. live this afternoon in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. the anticipated clearing of a home also camp in san francisco did not materialize. the coalition for the homeless said last week that they planned to clear their encampment. the coalition said they received written notice to vacate but they were still there this morning receiving food from the salvation army. authorities cleared out the same location last month. there was a fire there last week. hurricane miriam off mexico's baja coast is now a category 3 storm. the hurricane is in the pacific
